I had so much fun doing this illustration for the Global Talent Search 2018 for Lilla Rogers Studio!
The assignment was to do a gardener's journal covering using Japanese anemone flowers, a staghorn fern, and some lettering. And also to involve the color "griege," which is a grey beige. We had a week to complete it.
Here is a practice study I created of the flowers before doing the final project:
I took inspiration for my lettering from the signature type font created by the awesome Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I took inspiration for composition from traditional Japanese woodcut illustrators and added a border inspired by Mucha. I love the roughest and exciting inconsistency that comes from drawing on watercolor paper with a bamboo pen.
